Humpbacks of Notre Dame: How to Use Your Project in Activism

Home: California, United States

'Humpbacks of Notre Dame' is our award winning kinetic sculpture entry for 2022. We created our art as a tool to open a wide array of 'entry' points into a discussion about climate change. Spectators interacting with this piece lead themselves on a journey of discovery towards taking action on climate change. Elements from the original work will be recomposited as a static display, showing an example of using an existing event –the Kinetic Grand Championship– to bring awareness to the most important issue of our time: anthropogenic climate change. Whatever you or your cohort are already doing, you can use an existing venue to get your idea into the minds and hearts of others. Come see how we accomplished this with 'Humpbacks of Notre Dame.'

What Inspired You to Make This?

We'd been receiving strongly positive feedback each year for our art themes, whether we were pretending to be Luchadors or Caltrans workers, but began to wonder if we could do more. Inspired by a racing team who encouraged SPCA adoptions as part of their public interaction, we chomped down hard on the idea to bring a climate change oriented theme into a strongly right-wing area of California. We used humor to slip past people's defenses to engage them on this planet-altering issue.
