In 2020, the founders were inspired to start the project after an outdoor adventure left them without access to traditional communication methods. They realized the need for an affordable, easy-to-use communication device capable of enhancing safety and coordination in remote areas. This led to the creation of the Meshtastic software project, which utilizes LoRa radios on commodity hardware to establish a mesh network. This network allows users to share locations and messages during activities such as hiking, paragliding, skiing, and other outdoor adventures, enabling them to stay connected even in areas with no cellular coverage. As the community expands, more features have been added to support diverse use cases, including disaster preparedness and off-grid sensor monitoring.
